Greece is located in Southern and Southeast Europe and has about 11 million inhabitants. The capital of the country is Athens. Greece is situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, and the country has about 1500 islands of which 160 are inhabited.

The country is known for its beaches, islands and food, but is especially known for its rich history. The country has played a leading role in classical antiquity, and in Ancient Greece democracy emerged as a form of government.

Greece has quite many monuments featured on the World Heritage list because of its history. The country has 17 places on the UNESCO heritage list with: the temple of Apollo Epicurius in Bassae, the Acropolis of Athens, the Archaeological city of Delphi, the medieval town of Rhodes, the monastery complex of Meteora and Aghio Oros (Mount Athos) , the early Christian and Byzantine monuments in Thessaloniki, the sanctuary of Asklepios in Epidaurus, the archaeological site of Mystras, Olympia and Delos, the monasteries of Daphni, Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni of Chios, the Pythagorion and Heraion of Samos, the archaeological city of Aigai (the current Vergina), the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tiryns, the historical center (Chorá) with the monastery of St. John and the old town of Corfu.
