Hengelo is a city in Twente, in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Traditionally, there is a lot of technical industry in the city. Hengelo is therefore often seen as a former industrial city and also called metal city. The city is still relatively young and only came to growth in the 19th century. Because of its strategic location as a junction of railroad lines to Germany, the town was often targeted during World War II, with most of the inner city destroyed. For this reason, only small fragments of the old town center have been preserved. Hengelo has two landmarks in the inner city: the tower of the town hall and the tower of St. Lambert's Basilica.
