Horseheads is a village located in Chemung County, New York State. The village has a unique historical background, as its name originates from an incident during the American Revolutionary War. In September 1779, General John Sullivan's army was forced to kill their horses in this area due to their poor condition after a long military campaign. The skulls of these horses remained visible for many years, leading early settlers to name the area "Horseheads."
Today, Horseheads is a suburban community that serves as a gateway to the Finger Lakes region. The village maintains several historical sites and features a mix of small-town charm with modern amenities. The local community actively preserves its cultural heritage through various historical organizations and events that commemorate its distinctive past.
