Kinderhook is a historic village located in Columbia County, New York State. The village, founded in the 17th century by Dutch settlers, derives its name from the Dutch phrase "Kinderhoek," meaning "children's corner." It is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Martin Van Buren, the eighth President of the United States, whose home Lindenwald is now a National Historic Site.
The village maintains much of its Dutch colonial and Federal-style architecture, reflecting its rich historical heritage. Today, Kinderhook continues to be a small but culturally significant community, with several historic buildings and sites that showcase its important role in early American history. The village's downtown area features well-preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings, contributing to its architectural and cultural landscape.
