Le Chambon-sur-Lignon is a commune in the Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-central France. The town is notably recognized for its significant historical role during World War II, when its residents, led by local Protestant pastors André Trocmé and Édouard Theis, helped save approximately 3,000-5,000 Jewish refugees from the Nazi persecution. This humanitarian action led to the entire village being honored as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial.
Today, Le Chambon-sur-Lignon remains a peaceful mountain town, situated on the Lignon river plateau at an altitude of about 1,000 meters. The area maintains its Protestant heritage and continues to be a center for cultural and historical remembrance, with various memorial sites and educational initiatives dedicated to preserving the memory of its wartime resistance and humanitarian efforts.
