Sare (or Sara in Basque) is a picturesque village located in the French Basque Country, in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Situated at the foot of the iconic La Rhune mountain, this traditional Basque village is characterized by its well-preserved white houses with red timber frames, typical of Labourd architecture. The village, which dates back to the Middle Ages, has maintained much of its cultural heritage and traditions. Agriculture, particularly sheep farming, remains an important part of local life.
The village is also known for its prehistoric caves, including the Grottes de Sare, which contain evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years. The local culture is strongly influenced by Basque traditions, visible in the local language, festivals, and sports such as pelota, which is still played in the village fronton (wall court). The village's location in the heart of the Basque Country makes it an important center for discovering the region's rich cultural heritage.
