Schaefferstown is a historic community located in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1758 by German settlers, it is one of the oldest settlements in Lebanon County and represents an important piece of Pennsylvania German heritage. The town was originally named Heidelberg, after the German city, but was later renamed in honor of Alexander Schaeffer, its founder.
The community is known for its well-preserved historic architecture, including notable examples of Germanic colonial buildings. Schaefferstown's cultural significance is particularly tied to its role in early American brewing and distilling history, as it was home to one of America's earliest distilleries. The town maintains much of its historic character through various preserved structures that reflect the architectural and cultural traditions of its German-American settlers.
