Selkirk is a historic Royal Burgh located in the Scottish Borders region, situated on a high plateau between the Ettrick and Yarrow valleys. With roots dating back to the 12th century, the town played a significant role in Scottish history, particularly during the Wars of Independence.
Selkirk maintains strong cultural traditions, being known for its annual Common Riding festival, which commemorates the Battle of Flodden of 1513, where many of the town's men lost their lives. The town has a rich industrial heritage, particularly in textile manufacturing and shoemaking, with the latter giving rise to the famous 'Souters of Selkirk' (shoemakers) designation.
Today, Selkirk preserves its historical character through its architecture, including the prominent Town Hall and the restored 18th-century Courthouse building, while continuing to celebrate its cultural heritage through various community events and traditions.
