Vaison-la-Romaine is a historic town located in the Vaucluse department of southeastern France. The town is renowned for its rich Roman heritage, as evidenced by its extensive archaeological sites and well-preserved ancient ruins. Originally a Celtic-Ligurian oppidum, it became an important Roman settlement known as Vasio Vocontiorum.
The town is effectively split into two parts: the lower Roman town with its archaeological areas and the medieval upper town built on a cliff. The Roman remains include a bridge, theater, and residential areas with beautiful mosaics and thermal baths.
The town's cultural heritage extends beyond the Roman period, with notable medieval architecture in its haute ville (upper town) and a tradition of preserving and presenting its historical artifacts through various cultural institutions.
