Ypres (Ieper) is a small Belgian town in Flanders, in the southwest of the province of West Flanders. The town has its origins in the Middle Ages, when the first houses appeared on the river Ieperlee. Today the city is best known for its role during the First World War. To no avail, the German troops tried to occupy the city during four battles of Ypres. During this war half a million soldiers were killed in and around Ypres and the city was almost completely destroyed. Many war memorials and cemeteries in and around Ypres remind of this horrible time. Reconstruction took more than forty years. The Ypres of today is a reconstruction of what the city looked like before the war, with new neighborhoods.
