Exhibition 'Number 1 Crossbar Switching System (1941)' in Connections Museum
The Number 1 Crossbar Telephone Switch was the first to use this technology in the US. Developed by AT&T in the late 30's, this unit - the last surviving example - handled calls at Seattle's Lakeview office from 1941 to 1984. It was an improvement over the panel system that was also in use for most of this time period. Calls were connected faster and it was more reliable and needed less maintenance.
Ours still works and on our guided tours we demostrate it in action!
