Exhibition 'Panel Switching System (1923)' in Connections Museum
See a working panel switching system, the last one left out of over 500 that connected calls in larger US cities from the 1920s into the 1980s! Ours was in operation in Seattle from 1923 to 1974, and lovingly restored and maintained by an expert volunteer.
A highlight of our guided tours, visitors are amazed to watch the selector rods go up to connect calls and ring one of the vintage phones we use to demonstrate its operation. We give an introduction into the main components of the system: the line finders, senders, and selector panels.
