Exhibition 'Number 5 Crossbar Switching System (1948)' in Connections Museum
The Number 5 Crossbar Telephone Switch was from the last generation of crossbar switching technology in the US. Developed by AT&T in the late 40's, this unit - one of a handful in existence - handled calls at nearby Mercer Island's Adams office from the late 1950s to the 1980s when it was given to the museum.
It had a number of improvements over early crossbar switches. In addition to handling direct-dialed long distance calls, it had a trouble ticket puncher that could record information about problems detected automatically by the switch when calls were put through.
See it in operator on your guided tour of the museum.
