Berlin is the capital and the largest city of Germany. A small village in the 18th century, Berlin grew to be an important and large city by the 1920s, but then lost much of its importance and historic architecture due to the Second World. After the war the city was divided; East Berlin was the capital of East Germany, while West Berlin became a West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989.
Now the city is coming into its own again as a cosmopolitan capital of Germany, attracting mostly young people, students and a creative bohème. Berlin’s architecture is very varied, with architectural heritage from Prussian monarchism, Nazism, East German communism and the Potsdamer Platz filled with 1990s and 2000s style glass palaces. The city is home to well-known universities, orchestras, museums and entertainment venues. Museums cover almost everything, from art through Germany’s and Berlin’s history to various branches of technology and science.
