The Museum of Nature and Man, also known as Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre in Spanish, was inaugurated in the mid-1990s. It is an exhibition project that is part of the Autonomous Organism of Museums and Centers of the Cabildo de Tenerife. The museum is located in a neoclassical building outside the civil hospital of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain.
The Museum of Nature and Man boasts the largest existing collection of Guanche culture. It also has one of the most rigorous systems for the conservation and exhibition of mummified human remains worldwide. This was declared by the Cabildo de Tenerife in 2006.
The Museum of Nature and Man is recognized globally for its mummy conservation. It houses more than 140 embalmed bodies and 12 complete mummies. Among these, the oldest mummy from the islands is 17 centuries old.
The Museum of Nature and Man also features a large collection of prehistoric animal fossils that once inhabited the Canary Islands. These include the giant lizard (Gallotia goliath), the giant rat (Canariomys bravoi), and the giant tortoise (Geochelone burchardi). The museum also houses fossils of other extinct animals that lived elsewhere, such as trilobites and teeth of megalodon.
