The Pio Monte della Misericordia has a rich history dating back to August 1601 when it was founded by a charity brotherhood of seven young nobles. These nobles used to meet every Friday at the Hospital for Incurables to minister to the sick. In 1602, they established an institution and commissioned the construction of a small church, which was built by Giovanni Giacomo Di Conforto.

The Pio Monte della Misericordia underwent significant architectural changes between 1658 and 1678. During this period, the edifice was enlarged by architect Francesco Antonio Picchiati, who also annexed neighbouring structures.
