Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is housed in the former late 18th century St. James Hospital. The contemporary art in the museum contrasts with the neoclassical building. The collection focusses on experimental and informal art from the period 1945 to 1960. The museum owns about 250 Cobra works by painters such as Karel Appel, Corneille and Constant. But the collection also includes works by Jan Elburg and Lucebert, both painter and poet.

Stedelijk Museum Schiedam has 1 rating.
The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, located in the historic city of Schiedam in the Netherlands, offers visitors an engaging experience of modern and contemporary art. The museum is housed in a former hospital building, which adds a unique architectural element to the visit.
The museum's collection focuses primarily on Dutch art from the second half of the 20th century to the present day, with a particular emphasis on CoBrA art and contemporary realism. Visitors often appreciate the diverse range of exhibitions, which rotate regularly to showcase both established and emerging artists.
Many reviewers praise the museum for its well-curated temporary exhibitions, which often feature thought-provoking themes and innovative artistic expressions. The spacious, light-filled galleries provide an excellent backdrop for the artworks, allowing visitors to appreciate them fully.
The museum also receives positive feedback for its educational programs and workshops, which cater to both adults and children. These activities help to make art more accessible and engaging for a wider audience.
However, some visitors note that the permanent collection, while interesting, is relatively small compared to larger museums in nearby Rotterdam or Amsterdam. Additionally, a few reviewers mention that some of the exhibit descriptions could benefit from more detailed information or translations into other languages.
The museum's location in the center of Schiedam is generally seen as a positive, with many visitors combining their museum trip with exploring the charming town known for its gin history and windmills.
Overall, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam offers a quality art experience in a less crowded setting than some of the Netherlands' more famous museums. While it may not have the extensive collections of larger institutions, its focus on modern Dutch art and engaging temporary exhibitions make it a worthwhile visit for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
