Bruges is the capital of the province of West Flanders in Belgium. The city is known as a historic city with a lot of cultural heritage. The historic center is about 430 hectares and is recognized as a medieval city, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 2000. The oldest tangible source that used the city’s name for the first time are coins from before 875.

The historic center is well preserved. The current city center was however strongly influenced in the 19th century by the general interest in the neo-Gothic style. Many buildings were at that time decorated, restored or rebuilt in neo-Gothic style.
