Burghausen is a historic town situated in Upper Bavaria, Germany, along the Salzach River which forms the border with Austria. The town is most notably known for housing Burghausen Castle, the longest castle complex in the world, stretching over 1,000 meters along a hilltop ridge.
This medieval fortress, dating back to the 13th century, was the second residence of the Lower Bavarian dukes. The historic old town (Altstadt) beneath the castle features well-preserved Gothic and Baroque buildings, with many structures dating from the town's prosperous period during the Late Middle Ages.
Today, Burghausen maintains its historical character while also being an important cultural center in the region, hosting various arts events including the internationally recognized Burghausen Jazz Festival. The town's industrial heritage is also significant, as it developed into an important chemical industry center in the 20th century, balancing this modern development with its rich historical heritage.
