Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia, situated on the northern coast of Estonia. It is a historic city dating back to medieval times. The first fortress on Toompea hill was built in 1050 and Tallinn was first recorded on a world map in 1154. Its Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

In a striking contrast, in the immediate outskirts of the city centre you will find many modern office towers, with intermittent architectural monuments to the Soviet era. Further out though, there is a variety of historic and modern neighbourhoods with cultural heritage.

Today Tallinn is the major political, financial, cultural and educational center of the country.

Tallinn features many museums, most of which cover Tallinn's rich history and are located in Kesklinn, the central district of the city. An important historical museum in Tallinn is the Estonian History Museum, that covers Estonia's history from prehistoric times up until the end of the 20th century.
