Watervliet is a small city located in Albany County, New York State, situated along the west bank of the Hudson River. Originally part of the town of Colonie, it was incorporated as a city in 1896.
The city has significant historical importance due to the Watervliet Arsenal, established in 1813, which is the oldest continuously operating arsenal in the United States and continues to serve as a major manufacturing facility for military hardware. During the Industrial Revolution, Watervliet developed as a manufacturing center, benefiting from its location on the Hudson River and the Erie Canal.
The city's cultural heritage is closely tied to its industrial past and its role in American military history. The community maintains several historic buildings and sites that reflect its development from a small river settlement to an industrial center.
