Exhibition 'Rob Rombout On the Road – in Bredevoort' in Koppelkerk - art & culture
From April 24 through May 3, photographer and documentary filmmaker Rob Rombout will exhibit 16 portraits from his book ‘Portraits on the Road in Bredevoort’ in the upper hall of the Koppelkerk in Bredevoort. This book was created during his stay in Bredevoort in November 2025. On Wednesday, April 22, he will present this book at the Koppelkerk.
Artist in Residence
In November 2025, Rob Rombout—born in the Netherlands and now living alternately in Brussels and Portugal—stayed in the Achterhoek region for a week following the exhibition’s opening, with the intention of creating sixteen portraits during that brief period of people who have a connection to the Koppelkerk in various ways. Some of them were born and raised in the region; others ended up here after taking a detour. Rombout met them all at home, armed only with a camera and making use of the natural light streaming in through a single window.
On the Road
We saw that Rob Rombout creates beautiful portraits during the exhibition ‘Portraits on the Road’. He says about this: ‘The portraits in this series were created during film shoots, location visits, or simply while on the road. In seemingly ordinary places, striking figures unexpectedly appeared, whose fleeting presence makes the images all the more powerful.’ In his portraits, he captures encounters that, despite their fleeting nature, still reveal a sense of intimacy and complexity.
Gerco Mons on the exhibition ‘Portraits on the Road’ and the ‘Bredevoort Portraits’:
‘Rob Rombout’s exhibition here in the Koppelkerk, in the heart of the Achterhoek, is, for me, an ode to these chance encounters. Rob has proven himself a master at this. […] To be honest: I’m no art connoisseur. But I do know what I like. So I’d like to say: You’ve done a wonderful job, Rob.’
