Munich Residence and its collection

Munich Residence

The Munich Residence (Münchner Residenz) was a classicist-style city residence in Munich. Bavarian dukes, electors from 1623 and Bavarian kings from 1806 to 1918 stayed here. This complex is Germany's largest palace within city walls and one of Europe's most important museums for room decoration. It comprises ten courtyards and 130 rooms are open for visitors. From the 16th to the 19th century interiors of high artistic and material quality were created in Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicist and Historicist styles. The three main parts of the Munich Residence are the Königsbau, the Alte Residenz and the Festsaalbau.
