Agde is one of the oldest towns in France, located in the Hérault department in southern France along the Mediterranean coast. Founded by the Greeks around 500 BCE as a trading port named Agathé Tyché, the town has preserved much of its historical character. Built primarily from black basalt stone extracted from the extinct Mont Saint-Loup volcano, Agde is sometimes referred to as the "Black Pearl" of the Mediterranean.
The town's rich maritime heritage is reflected in its historic port, fortified cathedral, and various archaeological findings from different periods. Today, Agde combines its historical significance with modern coastal tourism, particularly in the nearby Cap d'Agde resort. The town maintains several cultural institutions that showcase its Greek, Roman, and medieval heritage, making it an important site for understanding the region's historical development.
