Barcelona is the second largest city of Spain and is the capital of Catalonia, situated on the northeastern Mediterranean coast op Spain, on a plain mostly surrounded by the mountain range of Collserola. The city is both historic as well as modern, with constant work on projects changing the face of the city. Barcelona has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, thanks to the many museums and attractions, its beach, a lively nightlife and a good taxi, metro and bus system.

The most important landmark in Barcelona has become the basilica of Sagrada Família, by the architect Antoni Gaudí. Not only this work by Gaudí is listed as UNESCO World Heritage, also 6 other buildings in or near Barcelona are listed: Casa Milà and Casa Batlló in Eixample, Palau Güell in Ciutat Vella, Casa Vicens and Parc Güell in Gràcia and Gaudí's Crypt in Colònia Güell.

Besides this 2 works by the Catalan art nouveau architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner are listed as World heritage: Hospital de Sant Pau in Eixample and Palau de la Música Catalana in Ciutat Vella.
