Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark. It is mostly located on the eastern coast of the island of Zealand. The city is the cultural, economic and governmental centre of Denmark. Copenhagen was originally a Viking fishing village founded in the 10th century, but became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century.
Today, the city's appearance is shaped by the role it has played as a regional centre. Copenhagen has many districts that all represent their own period and have their distinctive character. Tourism is a growing sector in Copenhagen, attracting visitors with its harbour, cultural attractions and fine restaurants.
Copenhagen has a wide array of museums of international standing. The National Museum (Nationalmuseet), is the largest museum of archaeology and cultural history of the country, comprising the histories of Danish and foreign cultures alike. Denmark's National Gallery (Statens Museum for Kunst) is the national art museum with objects from the 12th century to the present. Entrance to many museums is free once a week, mainly on Wednesdays.
