Kiandra is a historic abandoned gold mining town located in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. The town came to prominence during the gold rush of 1859-1860, when thousands of prospectors flocked to the area after gold was discovered. It was once a bustling community with a population of around 4,000 people, multiple hotels, stores, and other facilities.
Kiandra is also significant in Australian skiing history, being one of the earliest places where recreational skiing was practiced in Australia, with the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club established in 1861. Today, while the town itself is abandoned, the area remains an important historical site within Kosciuszko National Park, preserving remnants of its gold mining heritage and early skiing culture. The landscape surrounding Kiandra features sub-alpine terrain and provides insights into both the natural and cultural history of the Australian high country.
