The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, founded in 1638. The garden is about 3 acres in size and is home to 6,000 plants of over 4,000 species. In addition to an outdoor garden, the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam has a number of greenhouses which accommodate plants from desert regions, the tropics and the subtropics. There is also a butterfly house and a monumental palm greenhouse.

The Hortus Botanicus is a nice oasis of calm in the busy city centre of Amsterdam. It is a little on the small side, but that didn’t really bother me too much. A visit is a good way to spend some time away from the noisy city centre.

I always feel so peaceful after visiting the botanical garden. There is a nice palm house and the cactus area is great too. Would not recommend visiting in the winter though ;)
