Notre-Dame de Paris, also known as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral situated on Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, France. The cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is widely recognized as one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely completed by 1260, although modifications were made in the subsequent centuries.
Notre-Dame is renowned for its Lent sermons, a tradition that was established in the 1830s by the Dominican Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire. The cathedral is home to a variety of Gothic, Baroque, and 19th-century sculptures, as well as 17th and early 18th-century altarpieces. It also houses some of the most significant relics in Christendom, including the Crown of Thorns.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Notre-Dame was attracting approximately 12 million visitors annually, making it the most visited monument in Paris. This highlights the cathedral's enduring appeal and its status as a must-see destination for tourists visiting the city.
