Budapest results from the amalgamation of the two historic cities Buda and Pest,lying right opposite each other over the Danube river. Buda lies on the western side of the river, with a hill on which the Buda castle is located. Pest on the other hand is the flatter, eastern side, with the Parliament and various other stately buildings, retaining a lot of 19th century architectural heritage. The city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 for the significance of the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and Andrássy Avenue.
