Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography and its collection

Contemporary photography in two 17th-century canal houses in Amsterdam. Huis Marseille is the first photography museum in the Netherlands dedicated entirely to photography as an art form. Behind these faรงades begins a long history dating back to 1665. Two neighbours laid the foundation here: a diamond cutter, practicing his craft with precision, and a merchant who brought new influences to Amsterdam through the trade of goods. For more than 300 years, people lived and worked here, a past that is still palpable today. Since opening in 1999, Huis Marseille has presented a dynamic programme of contemporary photography, featuring international photographers alongside works from its growing collection. Historical photography and vintage prints are shown in dialogue with contemporary installations, often created specifically for these spaces. Photography as an autonomous art form is central, with attention to diverse perspectives and visual narratives. Visitors move through authentic period rooms and, via the double canal garden, reach the photography library and bookshop, places where looking slows down. Visit Huis Marseille in Amsterdam and discover photography in a unique historical setting.

Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography in Amsterdam is a well-regarded institution dedicated to the art of photography. Located in a restored 17th-century canal house, the museum offers visitors a blend of historical architecture and contemporary art. The museum hosts rotating exhibitions featuring both established and emerging photographers, providing a diverse range of photographic styles and subjects. Many visitors appreciate the intimate setting, which allows for a more personal engagement with the artworks. The museum's curation is often praised for its thoughtful selection and presentation of exhibitions. Some visitors note that the museum is relatively small compared to other Amsterdam institutions, which can be seen as both a positive (allowing for a focused experience) and a negative (potentially limiting the scope of exhibitions). The staff is generally described as friendly and knowledgeable. While the museum may not appeal to those seeking more traditional or historical art, it is highly recommended for photography enthusiasts and those interested in contemporary visual arts. Some visitors mention that the museum can be quiet, which enhances the viewing experience but may not suit those looking for a more interactive museum visit. The location along the canal adds to the overall experience, though a few visitors note that it can be slightly challenging to find. Overall, Huis Marseille offers a specialized and high-quality museum experience for those interested in photography as an art form.

An absolutely lovely museum. The first museum of the Netherlands that has his focus on photography, but gets forgotten often! Which is a shame actually. With the 4 diverse exhibitions a year which go in depth, have layers and sometimes different mediums such as installations it's a pleasure to visit. The people working there are nice and always in for a chat.
